Security locking for your access panels

Posted on 25th June 2024

In our previous blog we looked at the standard budget lock system used for most access panels, as promised today we are looking at alternative security locking options.

Tamper-proof cam locks used for access panels are inserted during assembly into the area where the budget lock key normally slots through for operation, this is secured at the back of the door connecting to the budget lock rim. Popular tamper locks include castellated, so called due to the insert resembling a turret and the key a crown and the slot and triangular tamper proof lock. If you are concerned about unauthorized tampering, tamper-proof locks are the way to go; these locks are devised to resist manipulation and forced entry.

Key operated cam locks also fit in to access panels in an equivalent manner to the tamper locks. Controlled by what most would recognise as a traditional key.

When using multiple panels for a project there is the option of having all cylinders keyed alike enabling all panel locks to be operated by all keys. For extra security you may wish all locks to be keyed differently, so each lock has a unique key and each user has their own key.

By use of a master key system locks are manufactured to take two key types. The unique key operating a specific lock (for instance in an apartment building by the property owner) and the master key held by Building Maintenance operating all locks in that system allowing access to all panels throughout the building.

This key lock system is often also the go to for anti-ligature access panels designed to minimize ligature points and improve safety in environments such as mental health facilities and detention centres.

If high security is a priority for your project Euro-cylinder locking is the way to go. Often specified for use in prisons, police stations, data centres and many other secure facilities to provide high security against various threats. Many are anti-pick, anti-drill and bump resistant, consider the level of security you require when specifying your requirements.

We can supply your access panels with cylinder, profile, and key, alternatively to further increase the security of your facility you may wish to specify supply with profile only and cylinder provided by others. Cylinders are then fitted on site by your own authorized personnel.

Fire Brigade locks or FB locks are specified for use when access is required by emergency services to restricted areas and often used for access to dry risers in the event of a fire. Swift access is crucial, access panels fitted with FB locks allow access during emergencies while maintaining security at all other times; additionally permitting authorized personnel in to undertake facilities maintenance.

When it comes to access panels, consider using a secure locking system suitable for your needs that allows authorized personnel to access specific areas while keeping others out. Look for options that offer security, durability, and convenience.

If we have not covered the locking system you require for your access panel specification, let us know; it is always a pleasure to help!
